Dean Foley

Dean is a member of:

Dean graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Bachelor of Law (Honours) in 2005 and completed the requisite training for admission with both Judge Shoebridge and Justice Forrest (ret.) prior to their Honour’s respective appointments to the Bench.

Since 2005, Dean has practiced exclusively in family law, including as Special Counsel at some of Queensland’s most prestigious firms.

In 2022, Dean was appointed as a Judicial Registrar in Divisions 1 and 2 of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. In that role, Dean undertook several hundred property and parenting dispute resolution conferences and also managed the progression of many hundreds of matters through the Court system. That role included the management and progression of matters at regional registries, and specialised lists for those matters where the property pool was more modest and early resolution was imperative.

During his time as a Judicial Registrar, Dean was always keen to identify opportunities to narrow, if not resolve, disputes as soon as possible.

Prior to taking up his role at the Court, Dean’s practice included both parenting and property matters, and he had a particular focus on matters which involved a bankrupt party and/or trustee in bankruptcy, multiple-party proceedings, and matters involving complex structure and tax issues where specialist advices and approaches were required.

Dean’s practice also included a broad range of parenting disputes, ranging from the most serious Magellan matters, through to international relocation and child support disputes (including disputes involving the child support agency, or the equivalent, in other countries).

Throughout his career Dean has been a regular contributor to a variety of legal journals, with the most recent being Thomson Reuter’s Current Family Law journal and he also had the opportunity to present at various legal seminars both as a practitioner, and on behalf of the Court in the Judicial Registrar role, over a number of years.

Shortly before commencing with the Court, Dean’s skills were recognised by his peers through both the Doyle’s Guide in 2021, and the publication ‘Best Lawyers’ in 2021, as well as being elected by his peers to the board of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland (FLPA) in 2022.

Dean prides himself on being able to break down complicated legal principles and approaches to their most core components and clearly communicate that to those he is working with in a straight-forward, uncomplicated manner.

Dean also has a thorough understanding of the variety of neuro-divergencies that parties and their children are managing and that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ answer.

Dean approaches mediation with a warm, balanced approach ensuring everyone’s voice in the process is respected.
